Overview

Ontario introduced a program called microFIT as part of the Green Energy Act in October 2009 that promotes the generation of energy from renewable sources such as wind, solar, tidal and biogas. Based on our ideal roof orientation and surface area we decided to participate in the scheme and opted for a 4.4 kW solar PV array that was installed by ARISE Technologies. The Ontario Power Authority is guaranteeing that solar PV registrants will be paid a fixed price of $0.802 per kWh for 20 years. The expected payback is around 11 years but the actual return on investment should be close to 10% before taxation. If you are interested in participating in the program, Halton Enablers of Renewable Energy (HERE!) can assist.

Solar Performance

The chart below will be updated automatically at each month end and represents a visual comparison of the electricity produced against what ARISE Technologies calculated.

Solar Income Comparison

The chart below is updated automatically and shows how much selected stocks and a solar investment have yielded over a period of time. The stock income is calculated based on Google Finance historical data and assumes that the initial investment is the same as the capital cost of the solar system when installed.
